American Express is getting bold with its premium cards, adding unprecedented new perks and increasing benefits — as well as raising annual fees.

Over the years, we’ve seen The Platinum Card® from American Express
increase from a $450 annual fee to $695 (See Rates). And early next year, the annual fee of The Business Platinum Card® from American Express will increase from $595* (See Rates) to $695.

To justify that new price tag, American Express has revamped the Amex Business Platinum’s benefits and added several hundred dollars worth of new statement credits. But here’s the pro tip: You can get these new statement credits for the old $595* fee by applying before January 13, 2022.

If you’re considering the Amex Business Platinum, here’s why you should open it before the end of 2021.

As long as you apply for the Amex Business Platinum by January 12, 2022, you’ll be charged $595* for your first year of card membership.

Whether or not you think the Amex Business Platinum’s ongoing benefits are worth $695, its welcome bonus alone is worth opening the card in the first year. You’ll earn 120,000 Membership Rewards® points after spending $15,000 on eligible purchases with your card within the first 3 months of card membership, and a 0% APR for the first 12 months from account opening on purchases eligible for Pay Over Time (then a 14.24% – 22.24% Variable APR).

Insider estimates Amex points are worth 1.8 cents each, on average. That makes this bonus worth around $2,160 in travel.

But with all the new perks Amex has managed to stuff into the card, you may find yourself keeping it year after year. Here are a few highlights:

Conservatively, the average person should be able to get $1,500+ per year in value from these benefits. I’ve saved $710 with Amex Offers** alone this year.

Get some statement credits twice in your first year

As for the statement credits that reset each calendar year: If you open the card now, you can use them in 2021 (the airline fee credits, Dell credits, and Adobe credits) and then again starting January 1, 2022.

You could potentially get $2,000+ worth of credits in the first few months of card membership — without having to pay a second annual fee.

The card also earns points at the following rates:

    • 5 points per dollar on flights and prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel
    • 1.5 points per dollar on each eligible purchase of $5,000 or more, and on eligible purchases in the U.S. at electronics goods retailers, software, and cloud service providers, shipping providers, and on construction materials and hardware supplies (on up to $2 million in combined purchases per year, then 1 point per dollar)
    • 1 point per dollar on all other eligible purchases

Do you qualify for the Amex Business Platinum?

The Amex Business Platinum is a small-business card, meaning you’ll need a for-profit venture to qualify. You don’t need to have a proper LLC, but you must at least have a side-gig such as:

    • Freelance writer
    • Uber driver
    • Petsitter
    • Tutor
    • DoorDash delivery driver

You also will not be eligible for this card’s welcome bonus if you’ve already earned the Amex Business Platinum’s bonus in the past. American Express enforces a once-per-lifetime rule for each card’s intro offer.

However, if you’ve previously opened or already have the personal Amex Platinum, you still qualify for the business card’s bonus.
